Project info
Studio II. + Studio III. - 1 week workshop (8th semester)

Task
Analyze the site of Bezistan in Belgrade and come up with an architectural strategy to find developing
possibilities. Find solutions for renovating the space and attracting more people. Define the important qualities
and build up on them in order to change this iconic ruin while keeping the main idea still present.
Description
Iconic ruin that is addressed in the workshop is a public space, inner atrium surrounded by mostly commercial function. It is highly frequented since it is used as a quick connector between various streets. A good quality of this plaza are various types of spaces within. There are roofed walkways, semi-open shading roof and even a fully open green space. What we found to be a problem is a fountain located under the shading roof structure. It tries to be the attractor point, which would stop the people but it does not work properly. Our goal was to find a new attractor point / structure and expand on the spatial variation within the plaza to elaborate on these qualities. The shading roof structure is melted down into an auditorium. This defines the walkways more strictly and therefore creates a space that truly serves as a stop. Also adding a staircase to make the roof accessible expands the variable spaces that are already present. This presents a possible approach to iconic ruins, their preservation and developing.
