Task

Come up with an architectural strategy to find developing possibilities

of the former socialist party center, Dezember palast, in Katowice. 

 

Is the ruin a state that is meant to be overcome or could it become a vital part of the project?

Description

Dezember palast, like multiple other iconic ruins, lost its original purpose thanks to social transition and through time and now it is hard to fill it with a function. Nowadays public squares and plazas are affected in similar manner because of modern times and lack of space in cities. Their function is often forgotten and pushed by the need for parking spaces. This exact problem occurs on the square in front of Dezember palast, therefore the strategy is to shift parking function inside the unused building spaces and bring back the public space and extend it. For efficiency automated parking system is used. This system is further implemented into other parts of the building to give it a new characteristic trait. Hall is connected with the public square and there, with the use of intelligent machine, automated adaptable public space (marketplace) is created.
